We are launching this site on Kali Puja( Diwali) day as a tribute to
This site will give the history, legend, location and other information about the Kalighat Kali temple. A photo gallery is also included. More information about the organization of the temple will be provided shortly.
Later on information about the different forms of MAA Kali and her Upasana will be given. Original poems about MAA and English translations of poems from other languages would be added.
Kalighat is located in the city of Calcutta on the banks of the river Hooghly (Bhagirathi). The name Calcutta is said to have been derived from the word Kalighat. The river over a period of time has moved away from the temple. The temple is now on the banks of a small canal called Adi Ganga which connects to the Hooghly.
This site is put up by a Kali Bhakta for the benefit of the Bhakthas visiting Kalighat temple. This is not a commercial site. We do not offer on line pujas or collect money in any manner.
The views expressed in this site are that of a Bhakta who spends at least one hour every day in the temple. The comments and opinions of the Devotees of MAA KAALI are welcome. Please give your experiences about MAA and her kindness. This could very well be the start of a Sathsang.
More photographs of MAA, the temple and additional information are needed to make the site useful. Please let me know by posting in the Dream Book.
The English translation of the collection of songs on MAA KAALI/DURGA by Ramprasad Sen and other poets of Bengal (Bengali Religious Lyrics, Sakta, by Spencer and Thompson) is available on line here.
